Program Services
All of our services are provided free of cost. Our ultimate goal is to empower young at-risk inner city females, in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region, with the skills necessary for them to adequately compete with all young people. We offer mentoring, interactive workshops, presentations featuring a diverse group of guest speakers, educational fieldtrips, and tutoring to promote positive and attainable goals and lifestyles for adolescent girls.
Our organization formally meets with the young ladies enrolled in our program two Saturdays every month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Informally, mentors work with their assigned mentees on an ongoing basis. Our guidelines require the girls to be at least 11 years old and in the fifth grade upon enrollment, but no older than 15. A parent or legal guardian receives a copy of all of our policies and procedures.
Listed below is a brief synopsis of the areas that we address:
- Relationships - How to maintain healthy relationships is emphasized in this component. All relationships are discussed including family and peer relationships. An important topic covered is how to identify an abusive relationship for yourself or a loved one.
- Conflict Resolution - The goal is to challenge our young people on how to address potentially combative situations in a non-violent manner. This area contains anger management exercises and bullying prevention. For this component the girls also participate in role-playing activities of real-life situations that they encounter.
- Etiquette - The etiquette component covers issues such as beauty and hygiene tips. We focus on the girls discovering the importance of their inner beauty and maintaining high levels of respect for themselves as well as their peers. There are also exercises on teaching the young ladies proper mannerisms, appropriate behavior, and being refined in all social settings.
- Health & Wellness - Strengthening the girls’ emotional and physical health is be the theme of this area. Topics covered include age-appropriate sexual health education, the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting proper rest.
- Public Speaking Skills - This component focuses on speaking in front of audiences in many different facets from the work environment to the classroom environment. Women who are educators, performers, and public officials visit and offer public speaking tips, confidence boosters and ways to manage the fear of speaking before large audiences.
- Intro to Careers –To expose the young ladies to various career opportunities, women in several fields visit and speak at the program. Also entrepreneurial women who own their businesses speak to the girls and share their stories. The Intro to Careers component also includes ‘Dress for Success’ classes to introduce the young girls to the proper way to dress for college and job interviews. The underlying theme is to have the girls understand that their goals are limitless and should only be defined by their achievements.
- Educational Tutoring - To ensure educational achievement the girls are offered individualized tutoring in their needed subject areas. For girls who are already excelling this is offered as educational reinforcement to prepare them for high school academics and beyond. The overall aim is to equip them with independent study habits.
